This site uses cookies No problem More info.A cornice is basically a decorative open box mounted above your window to frame the curtains and give the room a finished, tailored look.

A padded cornice gives a softer, more textural feel to the room. The cornice box completely covers the curtain rods, so make sure that you take that into account when measuring the width of your window.

Measure your window from side to side. Most curtain hardware is mounted three inches outside of the window frame, so add 8 inches to get the minimum width of your cornice board. Measure your window from top to bottom and divide this number by five to give you a basic idea of how tall your cornice board should be.

You can make the cornice board as tall as you like. Cut a one-by-four to your desired width, and cut two pieces to your desired height. For example, if your cornice board is going to be 38 inches wide and 10 inches tall, you need one inch one-by-four and two inch one-by-fours. Lay the plywood on top of the frame, and nail or screw it along the top and down both sides, leaving the bottom open. Lay your quilt batting on top of the plywood, smoothing out any wrinkles or creases before the adhesive sets.

Let the adhesive dry according to the time suggested on the label. Add more layers of batting according to how thick you prefer the padding to be, spraying the batting with adhesive between layers.

Lay your fabric print side down on your table or work surface. Place the cornice board on top of the fabric with the batting side down. Pull the fabric up over the cornice board, and staple it in place. Fold the edges of the fabric under before stapling it for a more finished look. Measure four inches out from your window frame on each side. Mark that spot, and then measure straight up to where you want the top of the cornice board to be.

Mark that spot as well. Hold the L-brackets up to the pencil marks so the brackets lie flat against the wall with the L sticking out at the top, parallel to the floor, so that the cornice board can rest on top of them.

Mark the holes in the brackets. Drill through the hole marks using a bit that is slightly smaller than your drywall anchors require. Attach the L-brackets to the wall by using your drill to poke screws through the holes and into the drywall anchors. Place your cornice board on top of the L-brackets. Secure it to the brackets with wood screws attached to the L-brackets from the underside of the cornice board.

Whilst in the end this will always come down to personal preference here are a few guidelines that will help to narrow down the choice. A common mistake is to underestimate the actual size of coving or cornice. This is often confused with taking a diagonal measurement across the face of a piece of coving.

For example a cornice with a drop and projection of mm, which we would call a mm 5 inch cornice, when measured across the face will actually be around mm 7 inch. The largest plaster coving we stock has a drop and projection of over mm and can be found in our large coving section. This is often used for hiding pipework as it is too big for anything but the largest rooms with the highest ceilings in older properties.

You need to have 4. When measured across the face of the coving it is mm 12 inches wide. Cornice with either a drop or projection of mm and above is most often fitted in rooms with a ceiling height upwards of 2. Different designs can look more pronounced than others so again there is no absolute size rule that dictates which cornice is most appropriate.

A lot will depend on personal choice as to how important an element of the interior decoration scheme you wish the cornice to be, and how it relates to other decorative elements on the wall.

With higher ceilings, a plaster dado or picture rail is often used to break up the wall and allow for different colours to be used above and below. Large cornice LPC looks well proportioned in a room with a high ceiling.

It can be hard to imagine how these larger coving sizes will look in a room and we would always advise buying a sample first if you are not sure.

Log in Create account Search store. In Classical architecture, and even Neoclassical, a cornice is the uppermost horizontal area that protrudes or sticks out, like moldings along the top of a wall or just below a roof line. It describes an area or space that overhangs something else. As space is a noun, cornice is also a noun. Crown molding is not a cornice, but if the molding hangs over something, like a window or air vent, the protrusion is sometimes called a cornice.

The function of the cornice overhang is to protect the structure's walls. The cornice is traditionally by definition decorative. However, cornice has come to mean many things. In interior decorating, a cornice is a window treatment.

In hiking and climbing, a snow cornice is an overhang you don't want to walk on because it is unstable. Don't worry if this is too difficult to comprehend. One dictionary describes it this way:. Cornice is, indeed, Classical because it comes from the Latin word coronismeaning curved line. The Latin is from the Greek word for a curved object, koronis — the same Greek word that gives us our word crown. In ancient Greek and Roman architecture, the cornice was the uppermost part of the entablature.

Today's builders generally use the word eave to describe the protective overhang of the roof. However, when the word "cornice" is used in home design description, three types are common:.

A door cornice may be a similar decoration, protruding over a door frame. These types of cornices often add an elegance and sophisticated formality to interiors. You may see what's called cornice molding or cornice moulding at the Home Depot store all the time. It may be molding, but it's generally not used in a cornice. Reproduction in whole or in part without permission is prohibited.Learn something new every day More Info In order to choose the best ceiling cornice, you should consider the size of cornice that would be best for the room, the material you would like for your cornice to be made from, and which style will suit you best. Ceiling cornices are generally measured by width and come in many sizes. They are made out of several different materials, and the material you choose will affect the look and, possibly, the installation of your cornice.

There are a variety of styles of ceiling cornice available, and you will want to make sure you find the right one for the room. A ceiling cornice is typically measured from top to bottom, and the typical size range is 5 inches Some cornices, however, may be as large as 20 inches To pick the size of your ceiling cornice, think first about the height of your ceilings, as higher ceilings require wider cornices.

Another factor that may affect the size of cornice you pick is how much attention you want to direct toward the cornice itself. A larger cornice will look more dramatic and have a bigger effect on the room. You can find ceiling cornices made from wood, plaster, or metal. Wood and plaster may have a similar look when completely installed, but plaster can be more difficult and messy during installation. For this reason, many consumers find wood to be a simpler choice.

What Is the Average Width of a Cornice Box?

Wood cornices can also be made as hollow pieces, so they may be lighter and, perhaps, easier to handle. Metal ceiling cornices may be made of materials like brass, copper, or chrome, each of which has its own distinctive look.

Cornices are made to match many different styles of decor and can be modern or traditional in their appearance. Some have very simple, clean lines and are perfectly symmetric, while others have embossed or carved designs that can be very intricate. The number of steps or levels on a ceiling cornice will also affect how dramatic it looks and the style it gives to the room.

Think about the current style of the room and what style you would like for it to ultimately have to help you pick the best ceiling cornice.
